Program Description

The National Diploma in Animal Production & Management at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara is a practically oriented programme designed to train skilled and competent professionals in livestock production, animal health, and farm management. The programme equips students with the knowledge and hands-on skills required to improve animal productivity, promote sustainable livestock practices, and support the agricultural sector.

Students study key areas such as animal nutrition, animal breeding and genetics, livestock management, pasture and range management, animal health and disease control, farm records and agribusiness management, extension services, and environmental sustainability. Emphasis is placed on practical training through farm practice, laboratory work, field attachments, and community-based learning, enabling students to apply theory to real farming and livestock production environments.

Graduates of the programme acquire essential skills in livestock rearing, feeding and nutrition management, disease prevention and control, farm planning and record keeping, animal handling, and advisory services. They are trained to manage livestock enterprises efficiently and contribute to food security and rural development.

Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared for careers such as animal production officer, farm supervisor, livestock technician, extension worker, agribusiness assistant, farm manager, and self-employed livestock entrepreneur in government institutions, private farms, NGOs, and agricultural projects. The programme also provides a foundation for further studies and professional advancement in animal production, agriculture, and related fields.
