Program Description

The Diploma in Computer Science at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara is a practical and skills-oriented programme designed to equip students with foundational knowledge and hands-on competencies in computing and information technology. The programme prepares graduates to effectively use, manage, and support computer systems in a wide range of organizational and technological environments.

Students study core areas such as computer programming, database fundamentals, computer hardware and maintenance, operating systems, computer networks, web development, information systems, and basic cybersecurity. The programme emphasizes experiential learning through laboratory practicals, projects, internships, and field attachments, enabling students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world computing challenges.

Graduates of the programme acquire essential skills in problem-solving, programming, system troubleshooting, database management, web development, and IT support. They are trained to adapt to evolving technologies and provide technical solutions that enhance organizational efficiency and service delivery.

Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared for entry-level careers such as computer technician, IT support assistant, systems support officer, database assistant, web developer, network support assistant, and ICT officer in public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and small-to-medium enterprises. The programme also provides a strong foundation for further studies in computer science, information technology, and related disciplines.

Entry Requirements


  • At least one (1) Principal Pass and two subsidiaries at "A" Level and least five (5) Passes at "O" Level in one sitting or its equivalent.
  • A Certificate from a recognized institution of higher learning with a credit in a relevant field and three (3) passes at "O" Level in one sitting or its equivalent.
  • A candidate should have passed Mathematics at "O" Level,
  • For Mature Age students: A candidate must be at least 25 years and above, and scored 50 % and above in Mature Age Examination from a NCHE recognized Centre,
  • A Higher Education Certificate (HEC): A candidate must have passed a relevant HEC accredited by NCHE with a distinction or credit.
