Pioneering Solutions: Advancing Research and Innovation at USJM

At the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara (USJM), research and innovation are key pillars of academic excellence and societal transformation. A remarkable testament to this vision is the work of a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), who recently developed an Accident Detection System as part of their research and innovation journey. Motivated by the increasing number of road accidents and the urgent need for faster emergency response, the student engineered a system capable of detecting vehicle crashes in real-time and instantly notifying emergency contacts.

Using integrated sensors, GPS technology, and mobile connectivity, the system continuously monitors a vehicle’s movement. Upon detecting abrupt changes such as a collision or sudden stop characteristic of an accident, it automatically triggers an alert. This alert includes the precise GPS coordinates of the incident and is sent to emergency service providers and selected contacts, thereby reducing the time it takes for help to arrive.

This groundbreaking project not only highlights the student's technical acumen and innovative thinking but also showcases USJM’s dedication to nurturing impactful research at the undergraduate level. The system has undergone multiple testing phases and was presented during university innovation showcases, where it received commendation from faculty and peers alike.

USJM supports such student-led initiatives through access to modern computing labs, hands-on mentorship from lecturers, and integration of research into coursework. By encouraging students to translate theoretical knowledge into practical applications, the university continues to strengthen its role as a catalyst for development and positive change.
